I just reread Betsy’s Wedding for the umpteenth time. One of many reasons I follow you in addition to your novels, is the fact that you also love BetsyTacy.

Smart woman.

Also that sweater dress…I die!

Besides Oldster, Department of Salad is my favorite paid Substack. Thank you for recommending The Spread -- I had never heard of it and really miss women's magazines!

Well, after that how could I not pre-order? Also the way my mind works I'll forget all about it and it will be a pleasant surprise this summer.

As you probably know covers can be quite the, um, journey, but the folks at HarperCollins knocked this one out of the park on the first try.

Thanks for the recommends! I found one of your older books BUTCHER'S HILL in my stacks earlier this year. Loved it!

At this point, fiction is more credible than real life, and I'm rethinking some of my newspaper/magazine subscriptions. Whoever mentioned substacks as a gift is brilliant.

Happy Holidays, Laura! It finally dawned on me this year to tell family members who want to buy me a present to get me a substack subscription. Because I don't need more shit in my house. And I want to support writers! Among the ones I am currently ponying up for are Girls of a Certain Age (Kim France, former EIC of Lucky Magazine, is so good); The Department of Salad (food writer Emily Nunn, who is our age and wrote for SO MANY newspapers plus the New Yorker, was recently told by the Washington Post to apply again when she gets more experience. She is the Queen of Salads plus posts great photos of her poodle, Cookie), and Starfucker (Liz Goldwyn of the MGM Goldwyns, is a writer, filmmaker, and collector of vintage clothes. Also Taylor Swift bought her family's legendary house and that whole story is amazing.)

I also subscribe to GOAC and The Department of Salad, but now I'm curious about Starfucker.

Liz Goldwyn is RIGHT UP YOUR ALLEY. She recently sold off a lot of her clothing archive and it's probably just as well you weren't looking then.

How do you sleep listening to Bill Bryson? My favorite book of his is the one about Australia, and I’ve never laughed so hard in my entire life.

You have to turn it down really low, so it's just a rumble in the distance.
