"par·ei·do·lia ˌper-ˌī-ˈdō-lē-ə -ˈdōl-yə : the tendency to perceive a specific, often meaningful image in a random or ambiguous visual pattern. The scientific explanation for some people is pareidolia, or the human ability to see shapes or make pictures out of randomness. Think of the Rorschach inkblot test."

What a great word! Thank you for the introduction.

I think Medicare is fab. Well, it's been good to me so far. As for growing old, I LOVE saying things like, "Well, 40 years ago . . . ."

Love your bird mosaic!

I met so many younger people whose kids were the same age as mine. But they were older as parents than I, & I often sought their advice. I’m also using la Vida vieja from now on

This was just a fun perfect read on a cold night. Only thing missing was a picture of you in a cute outfit and awesome shoes!

NARQ! I love that and will use it with my students. And of course, greyhounds. :)

But what struck me is, "How does one evaluate one’s singular life against the backdrop of a year that was such a spectacular shit show on a global level?"

This is a serious question- does it require cognitive dissonance when good or bad things in our immediate social/familial spheres run counter to current cultural or global trends? There's the old saying that all politics is local, but that no longer seems true. I don't think your question is easily answered; heck, it may not even be answerable!

Nothing wrong with being culturally old. In my late 20s, I would drive up to NYC one or two Saturdays a month and see two shows. I watched so many plays surrounded by seas of gray hair. I also got plenty of enjoyment and education from it. :)

My favorite stage for my children was whatever it was at the moment! And you keep loving that 13-year-old!

I had a one month coverage with Medicare before I could get my state retirement group insurance. Happiest camper in the world. I had been on a private policy in the high risk pool for three years.

Loving la vida vieja as well. Not quite as healthy as you, but the pills keep it all smooth. Donate blood regularly, usually on yoga day. Scared them with my resting heart rate last time. Lower than my usual 54. 😁

Older than you by a bit. Will happily read these musings whenever you share them. Enjoy all of your daughter’s ages. Always love that you selectively share them.

1) The footnote!!! LOL. 2) I had to look up pareidolia, too! :D 3) I was a good kid but felt pretty damn lost as a young teenager, and my mother was my unfailing guide in navigating it. Because of her and her unending prayers, I've turned out okay. MOTHERHOOD MATTERS.

I, too, qualify for medicare early next year. I would like to think I've not yet achieved old man status, but that is for other's to decide. I've been called an "old man" a few times the past couple of years, and I manage to laugh it off (so far). Loved Prom Mom and looking forward to your next book. I've been with you as a reader from the start, and, yes, it's been many, very enjoyable reads.

Maybe no one else has said so, but no, you are not an Old Lady. I am just approaching Old Man hood myself and you are considerably younger, so there!
