Re your comment 4 - of course you're miffed. I think your editor was too insecure. I don't think it mattered whether or not the readers knew where the reference came from. It still works even if you've never heard of Jane Eyre.
I once had an op-ed editor remove "moral compass" from an editorial because "I never heard of it, and if it were common usage, I'd know it." AND THE MANAGING EDITOR STUCK UP FOR HIM.
Love "Y’all, I carry my grudges forever." Completely get that, particularly in reference to editors. But pretty sure the defined calves are from the daily walks.
Gawd, I would love to know who that idiot editor is. You have my email address, Laura. If it's not too telling-tales-out-of-school, I'd love to know. Or maybe you could just give me his/her initials?
Anyway, can't wait to read "Prom Mom" and look forward to your in-person readings.
(Oh, also love love love that caftan -- it's gorgeous. I'm a big caftan-wearer myself; they're so elegant. And you look great in that pic.)
Meanwhile, I'm trying to figure out how to get my novel, set in Balto in the 1990s, into a Baltimore bookstore or two. Any tips. for the indie-published among us (https://mumblerspress.com/by-chris-lombardi -- please forgive the self promotion. which will stop now.)
How are you surviving the heat right now, Laura? Here in Swampadelphia we're clinging to the AC and dreaming of September.....
Dear Laura, I hear you about travel, but I submit that I enjoy zoom events as much as I enjoy in-person ones and I’m able to attend more of them. Just something to consider. Would love to hear you talk about this book. The section you read at WIP was incredible. 🥰🌷
All I can say is, I've circled Aug 2 in Westminster so I can finally see you on a book tour again. Way too many books since we met over "No Good Deeds" andI'm looking forward to your wit, wisdom and gifting myself "Prom Mom" as an early b day present! I'm thinking I'll wear something Beany Malone might approve of, if her friend Dulcie whipped it up on her sewing machine!
Great idea, perfect for a Prom Mom evening! I'll borrow it from Mary Fred, it wont be too bad with a purplish corsage from Andy Kern. And I just realized if I waltz in Aug 2, I'll miss the book signing. So Aug 1, there I'll be.
I can't wait for my copy of Prom Mom!!! I'm arranging my reading schedule around it--no joke. Wish you were coming to the Midwest on your book tour, but will you please publish a note with some pics of what you wore on it?! Xoxox
Michael Koryta and I tried so hard to set up an event together -- his book has the same pub date -- but it was not to be. And, yes, I will share my book tour looks!
Man, I despise those kinds of editors. And speaking of...disappointment, what, no New York City stop on your tour? Did I read that right? I've just finished Lady in the Lake (riveting) (and funny!) and have now just started My Life as a Villainess (riveting and funny!) and wish I could tell you IRL how much I adore you. xo
The proper fate for the editor who took that line out: Reader, she buried him.

OMG at the newspaper editor’s comment! I am really not very well read at all, and even I know that reference ☺️
And hope you thoroughly enjoy your tour!

I’m pre-ordering because of note 4.
I have nanny-pamby calves and weak ankles, and need to get some tone to them. This was very helpful.
Also, love the caftan. So good.

Laura, congrats on your book, and I am laughing at all these descriptions of getting a bad review/useless criticism. xoxo
Why isn't Philly on your list? Because Philly and Bawlmer are too alike? Book pre-ordered, of course.
If only book tours were that logical . . . thank you so much for the pre-order.

Reach out to Greedy Reads & Charm City Books to see if they would host a reading. Might have events coming up that you could participate in, too.

re: holding grudges...I would still be harboring that grudge as well!
I’ll be at my happy place on the Outer Banks in August, happily reading my pre-order! Good wishes to your tour!

Hey, maybe dig out that pallid pink formal.

Maybe next time (I will hope and pray!)? And THANK YOU!!! xo

Is there a way to DM on this platform? Because I will be in NYC but it's not exactly a book event.
I don't think you can DM here. But if you email me at valeriemonroe.substack.com I can answer you with my personal email... xo
What kind of editor doesn't know Jane Eyre?
